Transforming cancer care for all Australians using patient-reported measures

WHAT IS THE PAN CANCER INITIATIVE AND HOW WILL IT IMPROVE CANCER CARE?

The Australian Real World Cancer Evidence Network, also referred to as the Pan Cancer Initiative, is a co-funded partnership between Movember and the Australian government (through Cancer Australia).

The Pan Cancer Initiative aims to optimise cancer care delivery and help achieve even better outcomes for all Australians by integrating patient-reported outcome and experience measures (PROMs and PREM), collectively referred to as patient-reported measures (PRMs), across the cancer care sector. Using PRMs will help ensure people with cancer receive the best care possible by prioritising their actual experiences and needs. This initiative is an important step to ensuring that patient experiences and outcomes are central to cancer care, a key five-year strategic goal of the Australian Cancer Plan.

Currently, patient-reported outcomes and experiences are not routinely or consistently captured within clinical care or larger datasets, such as clinical quality registries (CQRs), across Australia’s cancer care sector. And despite significant progress in recent years, there remains variability in how and when patient-reported outcomes and experiences are measured and recorded.

While cancer outcomes in Australia are among the best in the world, variability in the collection of PRMs creates gaps in understanding patient needs. By working with the cancer sector, this initiative aims to embed PRMs into routine care, empowering patients, optimising equitable, patient-centred care and enabling national benchmarking of patient-reported data.
